Other citronella preparations fared even worse.ย So unlessyou are willing to walk around constantly spraying yourself, forget thecitronella products.ย So what works?ย N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide orโDEET.โSome people worry about DEET because theyโve heard reports of toxicreactions and are suspicious of the substance because it is a syntheticchemical.ย Whether a substance is synthetic or not has nothing to dowith its safety profile.ย Indeed DEET has a remarkable safety record.ยIt is estimated that since its introduction around 1960, about 8 billiondoses have been applied to humans.ย And this has resulted in fewer than50 serious toxic effects of which more than 75% resolved with anyfurther problems.ย In the handful of cases where there were residualeffects, there was heavy, frequent application over the whole body.ยThe New England Journal study has now shown that such applications arenot necessary.ย A DEET concentration of 24% provided five hours ofprotection.ย Even a 5% concentration, which can be used on children, kept the mosquitoes away for an hour and a half.ย DEET should not beused under clothing, on an open cut or with sunscreen.ย So there itis.ย Look for a product that has between 25 and 30% DEET for adults andapply it every four hours or so.ย For young children use the 5%stuff.ย If you really want something โnatural,โ although I donโtknow why that should be appealing, โBite Blockerโ made with soy oiloffers about ninety minutes of protection as do products made witheucalyptus oil.ย And if you think that citronella has a pleasant smell, youโre not alone.ย Mosquitoes like it too.A recent study by Consumers Union corroborated these results.ย โOffDeep Woodsโ with 98% DEET kept mosquitoes and ticks away for over tenhours.ย Products with 20-34% DEET worked for at least five hours.ย Thebest non-DEET product was Repel Plant Based Lemon Eucalyptus whichcontains p-menthane-3,8-diol.ย It worked for about three and a halfhours.ย Products with picaridin did not work well, neither did a shirttreated with permethrin.ยJoe Schwarcz โ July 21st/2016
